University of Michigan Press | Fund to Mission
Fund to Mission is an open access publishing model developed by the University of Michigan Press in collaboration with LYRASIS, to create a more sustainable and equitable future for scholarly book publishing. Rooted in the original mission of university presses to disseminate knowledge as widely as possible, the model aims to make at least 75% of the Press’s newly published monographs openly available each year, without charging publication fees to authors.
Rather than relying on book sales or author payments, Fund to Mission is supported through a collective funding approach. Libraries and institutional partners contribute to a shared funding framework that helps cover the costs of publishing and enables open access distribution of high-quality humanities and social sciences research. Participating institutions continue to receive access to subscription content while simultaneously supporting the transition to a more open publishing ecosystem.
Through this partnership, KU contributes to the collective effort to sustain and promote the Fund to Mission model. By sharing responsibility for supporting open access monograph publishing, we collectively help strengthen the long-term sustainability of scholarly communication, expand global access to research, and increase the visibility and impact of academic work.
